Find Tranquility in Salado, Texas

If you’re looking for a slice of tranquility in your RV travels, slow down and visit the mellow town of Salado, Texas.

Salado is a quiet small Texan town that’s rich in history – if you want to catch a glimpse of Texas as it was in the early to mid 20th century, look no further than Salado. Founded in 1859, Salado found early success as an industrial and agricultural center. Salado College operated for a brief time until it closed in 1885. By 1884, Salado had grown to include 7 churches, 14 stores, 2 hotels, 2 blacksmiths, and 3 cotton gins. Unfortunately, the boom that Salado was experiencing was cut short when the railroad bypassed the town. The population went from a healthy 900 residents to just 400 by 1914 and a measly 200 by 1950.

Luckily, the population took a turn for the better and has steadily increased over the past few decades. With eighteen different sites included on the National Register of Historical Places, Salado offers a rare glimpse into the past. Places to see include the George Washington Baines House. There are also 23  Texas Historical Markers. The Chisholm Trail used to go right down Main Street. Salado Creek was the first recorded Natural Landmark in Texas in 1966.

The town took a swing for the better largely due to the famed dining room of the Stagecoach Inn, which began operating in the 1940s. As people came back, business flourished. Today, the charming town is full of shops that cater to visitors. There’s a 5000 sq. ft. boutique that sells clothing, knick knacks, and gourmet food, among other items, as well as art galleries, wineries, breweries, and delicious restaurants.

The town is also home to a vibrant creative community of artists and artisans. From pottery and paintings to woodworking and craft beers, you’ll love a peaceful stroll through the downtown area. Spend the day checking out quirky shops and then grab a bite at one of the fantastic restaurants, all of which are located among the historic buildings of a bygone time.
